May Art Challenges

With the looming pandemic, it can be challenging to be cooped up in your house with the same daily routine. With this being said, tapping into your creative side can be a great outlet for stress and anxiety during these trying times. Why not take part in an art challenge this upcoming May?

Art challenges inspire creativity and allow partakers to create art in a fun and stress-free way. In addition to this, art challenges can exercise your imagination and act as a form of catharsis from your daily life stresses. Why not put some time aside this upcoming May to create a unique piece of art every day, form a positive and productive habit, and develop your art skills!

We’ve put together a list of some art challenges taking place this May that you can take part in.

1. Munchy May

What is the Munchy May Art Challenge?

Munchy May is an annual art based project that runs during the month of May. This challenge invites creatives of any kind to create a visual depiction of their interpretation of food. Aside from its specifications, the challenge at its core works to encourage consistent acts of gratitude and dedication through a series of daily prompts.

Each prompt is aligned with a particular challenge or exercise. Artists partaking from around the world are asked to reflect on their meals and their corresponding artworks, to create a mindset shift towards gratitude and mindfulness.

Participants are asked to share the artworks they create on Instagram via their personal profiles, using the specified hashtags. By using the right hashtags when posting your work, you’ll be entered into the challenge. See the rules below for more details.

A curated selection of artworks will be selected from the daily submissions, and will be posted on the official Munchy May account throughout the 31 days. Once the month reaches its end, you’ll have another chance to have all your artworks showcased. This serves as a way of thanking artists for sticking through the challenge and carrying it out correctly.

If you are unable to take part in the challenge each and every day that is also okay! The ultimate goal of this challenge is to express yourself, be grateful, take on new perspectives and nurture your creative side.

Are there any rules?

The rules of this challenge are relatively simple:

  • Illustrate or paint a meal you’ve had that day
  • Post it on Instagram
  • Use the hashtags #Munchymay and #Munchymay2023
  • In the description of the post, state one thing this meal has made you grateful for
  • Repeat these steps every day during the day of May!
  • Image formats: JPG/PNG, ideally squared (minimum 1080 x 1080p)
  • Videos: Video entries welcome as long as they are supported by Instagram

By following these steps you’ll be submitting your work to enter the challenge.

What materials do I need?

There are no specific rules regarding materials for this challenge, but keep in mind that food illustration should be the main focus of this project. For your artworks to be eligible, they should be related to this subject.

2. Quick Kick May

Quick Kick is a mini-challenge running throughout the month of May, in which partakers set aside a maximum of 15 minutes a day to create a piece of art. In addition to this, you’ll also be challenged to create this simple illustration using your non-dominant hand! By participating in this challenge, you’ll be stimulating the creative side of your brain, as well as develop your art skills.

There are no rules regarding medium, so get crazy with it! Kick in the Creatives suggests that you carry a sketchbook or notepad with you every day throughout the month, making it increasingly easy to squeeze in some creative time while on the go. If you choose to take part, make sure to post your artworks on social media and tag #kickinthecreatives and #QuickKickMay. Wondering about inspiration? 3. Miniature May

For the second year in a row, Kick in the Creatives is hosting the Miniature May art challenge. This challenge invites creatives to create a miniature piece of artwork every day during the month of May. The rules are incredibly simple – create a mini artwork that is no bigger than 5’’ x 5’’, and most importantly, have fun! There are no restrictions on medium so feel free to use whatever you prefer. If you decide to share your work online or on social media, make sure to use the hashtags #kickinthecreatives and #MiniatureMay.

There is no particular theme for this challenge, so you can take the reins on that. If you’d prefer to follow a theme, you can select any of those mentioned in this article. Miniature May also involves a little optional twist – if you’d like you can create a video (maximum of 3 minutes) after the month of May documenting your experience with the challenge.

Make sure to include some of your favourite creations during Miniature May and send it through to Kick in the Creatives to share on their site.

4. Every Day May

The fourth and final challenge run by Kick in the Creatives is Every Day May. Unlike the other challenges, this one is hosted by a closed Facebook group that you’ll need to request to join prior to taking part.

The theme and prompts are posted in the group around mid-April and will be available for download. Throughout the month of May you’ll be asked to post a daily artwork that is inspired by the given prompt in the Facebook group. This challenge is for those who are eager to share their work with other creatives and be a part of a close creative community.

The rules are simple, post your inspired artworks daily and have fun! Also make sure to keep your artwork appropriate for all ages. If you’re struggling with time, try keeping your sketches simple – this challenge is about having fun, expressing yourself and forming creative habits.
