AI-generated art is trending! In this post we take a look at what AI generated art is, how and when it started, how text-to-image models work, why some think it’s controversal and of course how you can get started with it!

Let’s dive in and start exploring the fascinating world of AI-generated art!

What is AI generated art

Art generated by Artificial Intelligence (AI) has become increasingly popular in the recent years, as the technology continues to advance and generates more and more impressive works of art. Interest seems to skyrocket since July 2022 with the arrival of more easy to use (cloud) applications that makes AI generated art available for the masses.

AI art is defined as artwork that is created using algorithms, computer-generated imagery, or other forms of digital media. This type of art can take on many different forms such as abstract paintings, 3D sculptures, and even music. AI artists use a variety of tools and techniques to generate their pieces, including neural networks that are programmed to recognize patterns and create images or videos from scratch.

The possibilities for AI generated art are endless and provide an exciting new way for people to express themselves creatively. With AI art, anyone can be an artist no matter their skill level or prior experience. Whether you’re looking for a creative outlet or simply want to explore the world of AI art, there are plenty of resources available to get started.

How did AI generated art start?

The beginnings of AI generated art can be traced back to the 1950s, when scientists and engineers started experimenting with creating art through computer algorithms. In the 1960s, computer scientist Harold Cohen developed AARON, a program designed to create abstract paintings. During this time, many other computer-generated pieces were created, such as music and poetry.

By the early 2000s, artificial intelligence had advanced significantly and AI generated art became more popular. Today, various forms of AI art are being produced from facial recognition applications to generative models that create digital paintings. This art is often showcased in galleries around the world and is being used in advertising campaigns and other creative projects. AI generated art continues to advance as technology progresses, opening up new possibilities for creative expression.

What are applications for AI generated art?

AI-generated art is used in various fields:

  • The creation of images for music album art, book covers, comics, self-made card games, computer games and more.
  • Stock Photography (although not allowed on every platform, Adobe recently allowed AI-generated art to Adobe Stock).
  • Animations and videos (you’ll see an example later in this article)
  • Inpainting
  • Outpainting
  • Concept art
  • Video game model creation (textures, 3D object, characters, landscapes)
  • NFT creation

Text-to-image models

Most AI art generators use text-to-image models. Text-to-image models are a type of deep learning model that are used to generate images based on a given text caption (or prompt). The model takes the text as input and uses natural language processing (NLP) techniques to extract features from the text. It then uses a generative adversarial network (GAN) to generate an image that matches the description provided in the text. .

The GAN is composed of two neural networks, a generator and a discriminator, which work together to create realistic images. The generator creates an image from the extracted features while the discriminator evaluates it for accuracy compared to real images. Through this process, the model learns how to accurately generate images based on provided captions.

These models are an exciting new development in the field of deep learning and are becoming increasingly popular. Text-to-image models can generate realistic images from text descriptions, allowing for a wide range of applications. For example, this technology could be used to create avatars for virtual worlds or generate pictures of objects based on user-provided descriptions.

In addition, text-to-image models could lead to improved image search capabilities and more detailed image recognition systems. It is also possible that these models could be used to generate images from historical texts or create visual representations of abstract concepts like emotions or ideas. The possibilities are truly endless and the potential applications are only just beginning to be explored.

How does a text-to-image prompt work?

As we explained, text-to-image technology is a machine learning model that takes natural language descriptions as input and produces an image as the output. An example of this would be a description such as “A woman typing on a computer” and the AI generating a surprisingly accurate image that matches that description. This technology has been advancing rapidly this year with models such as DALL-E or Midjourney, which allow users to enter text prompts and have the AI generate images based on that prompt.

On Midjourney, if we enter the prompt “A woman typing on a computer”, we get the following result:

A woman typing on a computer
Prompt: A woman typing on a computer

Midjourney then uses the default model. But when we expand the prompt (A woman typing on a computer, realistic, volumetric light –v 4)and give a bit more information, the result improves drastically.

A woman behind the computer
Prompt: A woman typing on a computer, realistic, volumetric light –v 4

Okay, all nice, but let’s do something crazy: “A woman typing on a computer, on the rooftop, realistic, volumetric light –v 4

A woman typing on a computer, on the rooftop, realistic
Prompt: A woman typing on a computer, on the rooftop, realistic, volumetric light –v 4

So, what we did here when expanding the prompt was telling the system that we wanted to have a realistic looking image, with volumetric light, using V4 of the backend system. Other variables you can add to the prompt are details, like camera, art medium, material, lighting. You can also tell the system to mimic the style of an artist, like Van Gogh, Andy Warhol or Frida Kahlo for example. Finally you can also add parameters like aspect ratio, quality level and so on.

If you need some help, you can use a prompt-builder like promptomania.com which is incredible.

What is deep learning

To make it a big more technical, these models use something called deep learning. Deep learning is an artificial intelligence technique that uses multiple layers of neural networks to analyze large amounts of data. It utilizes a system of algorithms to model patterns and make predictions based on them. Deep learning has been widely used for image processing (AI art generators), natural language processing (AI text writers), voice recognition, and video analysis. In addition, it can be used for many other tasks such as predictive analytics and self-driving cars.

With deep learning, computers are able to process large amounts of data at once and uncover complex relationships between variables. This allows them to identify patterns in the data that would otherwise have been impossible to detect. As technology continues to advance, more applications of deep learning continue to emerge and its potential is limitless. For example, a deep learning algorithm might be trained on a dataset of pictures of different animals, and then be able to recognize and classify new pictures it hasn’t seen before. Think of it like a big computer brain that can learn and make smart decisions all on its own.

Is AI Art Controversal?

Yes, some might say it is. There are several reasons why AI-generated art can be controversial. To sum up a few: For one, it raises questions about the nature of creativity and whether machines can truly create something that is original and expressive. Some people argue that art should be a product of human imagination and emotion, and that AI cannot replicate these qualities. Additionally, there is a concern that the use of AI in art could lead to the displacement of human artists, potentially harming their livelihoods. Finally, there is a fear that the use of AI in art could lead to the creation of works that are indistinguishable from those made by humans, potentially leading to fraud and confusion about the true authorship of a piece of art.

How to start creating AI Art with an AI Art Generator?

Making art with AI is now possible for almost everytone with the help of an AI Art Generator. It is a generator that enables anyone to make art using AI. With these tools, it is easy to create AI-generated art without any technical or coding knowledge. Let’s take a look at a few of those.
