You might have seen the recent trend of twisted candles, whether it be on TikTok itself, or in the latest interior design blogs. This Candle Twisting trend has taken the world by storm and is definitely one of the major design trends of 2020 and 2021.
Interested in hopping on this trend and making your own twisted candles? We’ve got you covered. We’ll be taking you through the process of this viral craft, step by step, to ensure that you end up with the perfect decorative piece for your home.
How to create Twisted Candles:
Step 1 – Source the correct candles
This step is without a doubt the most important one. Make sure that you source the correct candles to start. Paraffin dinner or tapered candles seem to work best for twisting.
Step 2 – Place the candles into warm water
Next, fill up your sink, bath or a bucket with very warm/hot water. Place the candles you’re wanting to twist into the water and submerge them. Leave them soaking for around 15-20 minutes.
Tip: Don’t remove your candles from the water bath before at least the 15 minute mark. By not allowing your candles to soak for long enough, its likely your candles will snap or crack during the twisting process.
Step 3 – Bend and twist
By now, the candles should have softened into a malleable form that you can now bend and twist.
For twisted candles:
- Carefully remove the candles from the water and place it on a flat surface. Using a rolling pin, slightly flatten the section of the candle you’d like to twist.
- While the candle is still flexible, twist it into a spiral shape by turning each side in the opposite direction.
For bent candles:
- For this technique, don’t remove the candles from the water. Instead, start to bend and shape them while they are in the water, to make sure they don’t break.
Tip: If you’re twisting your candles, make sure to leave the top and bottom of your candle completely round and untouched to ensure that it can fit in a candle holder once it’s dry.
Step 4 – Secure the design
Place your twisted or bent candles in some cold water to secure the design.
Step 5 – Enjoy the result
Lastly, place your candle somewhere around your house to add that minimalist, stylish touch! These custom candles are also great gifts!
